My oldest son has started working for a local auto parts store. He worked there previously during his time with the high school’s transition to work program. He is a hard worker with great attention to detail and loves his job. He currently works 4 hours a week, but we hope to keep extending the amount of time.
On my son’s first day at work his manager was there to greet him. He pulled me aside and said that he was happy that my son had decided to work there. He said that my son had been his hardest worker and was always so pleasant to be around. He said he wished everyone worked like my son. What wonderful words for a mother to hear!
After a few weeks my son found his groove and had his schedule down perfectly and efficiently. He was able to do even more and at a faster pace. They were even able to give him additional tasks. Much of what he does involves cleaning and straightening the retail area. Because he does such a through job, the store started looking nicer. His co-workers noticed the change, and started to see other areas which could be improved.
One week I noticed that one of his co-workers volunteered to paint the inside of the store to make it look nicer. Then another co-worker volunteered to strip and refinish the floors. This was a huge undertaking. A different co-worker started working on cleaning up the back areas to make it easier to work in and arranged things to make the area more efficient. I commented on how great everything was looking and they said my son inspired them to make the work environment better and nicer.
Today one of his co-workers was putting the finishing touches on the floor (and boy did it look shiny and new – cleaner than even some of our local restaurants). While talking to him, he commented on how the store was originally considered one of the worst stores in the area, however, last week it was recognized by the district manager as the cleanest store in the region!
It’s amazing what an impact a person can make!
